This course is both science and science fiction; research and storytelling; utopia and dystopia; light and darkness. In groups of 3, you will choose a topic within your field of expertise and find an innovation, a discovery or an idea that you would like to know more about. The first half of our class will be dedicated to researching this subject and becoming an expert on it. This means, reading scientific articles and discussing them with your group. Once you have done so, you will be pitching this game-changing innovation, discovery or idea to the class, focusing on how it will make the world a better place. But then, you will find out that something has gone wrong. Somehow, the wrong people (or something else?) have gotten hold of this science and want to use it to their own ends. You will explore the ethical ramifications and the possible negative consequences of the development of your innovation, discovery or idea through the lens of a dystopian scenario. What happened? What went wrong? How was science misused? Your final task will be to use your best storytelling to immerse the class in a world of your own design, where you explain your research and explore the ethical consequences of missusing it.
Compétences requises
Ce cours est exclusivement ouvert aux étudiants dont le niveau se situe entre B2 et C2. Les étudiants ayant un niveau inférieur ou supérieur seront désinscrits.
Compétences visées
La compétence évaluée dans le cadre de ce module est la suivante :
présenter à l'oral un scénario de dystopie scientifique.
L'évaluation conduira à l'attribution d'un niveau tel que décrit dans le CECR (Cadre Européen Commun de Référence pour les langues) pour cette compétence.

Présentiel : 2 heures hebdomadaires
Syllabus
In groups of 3 and based on your research of an innovation, discovery or new theory within your field of expertise, create a dystopyan scenario and use your best storytelling skills to present it to the class.
